Its starting to really piss me off that people are angry at macklemore winning. So he has one silly song on his album. What does that compare to Jay Z and Kanye who mostly rap about sex and drugs? If you ever listened to the heist, you’d know that most of his songs are very deep.
Have you heard “New Slave” and “Black Skinhead”? This is ignorance.
I’m so mad at the Grammy’s yall don’t even know. I’m trying to refrain from the “White Privilege” drop, but you can’t deny it there. It makes me sick, and lose credibility for these things that the majority will stand true to.
Cant Hold Us - you shouldn’t let anything hold you back and just do you
Thrift Shop- having brand new expensive cloths shouldn’t matter
Same Love - its ok to have feeling for the same sex, all that matters is love
Make The Money - “Make the money, don’t let the money make you Change…
Sherane (aka Master Splinters Daughter)- The introduction to the story, explaining how a young man has been lusting for a girl. You find out later on that she sets him up, and the song ends with him pretty much running into a trap set by said girl after he’s borrowed his mom’s car to meet up with her. Here is also a skit where his mom calls him- leaving a voice mail asking for the car back. His dad is also in the picture, yelling for him to bring his domino’s back.
The Art of Peer Pressure- Said boy is a good dude, but when he’s around his friends, he likes to fit in. (Instantly, after the first minute, you get the whole picture, that initially it’s fun- he’s drinking and smoking with the homies, but that isn’t everything that they’re about.) The song transitions to him telling a story about how they’ve cased a few houses and carry out robbing them, while at the end, slipping away from the cops. The idea of getting caught sits in his head though. Keep in mind, by his point in the story, after getting roughed up by the guys and girl in the beginning, him and his friends are out riding around, waiting for these guys to pop up again and handle em.
ff again to
The end of Swimming Pools/ Sing About Me, I’m Dying of Thirst- The end of Swimming pools (the skit) finds the boy and his friends finding the people who jumped him, so they do a drive by. They get the guys, but at the expense of on of his friends losing his life as well.
The next song starts off with the dead friends brother talking to the boy about how he appreciates the boys love for his brother, but how he has to get revenge on the guys who were connected to his murder. He goes on about how the two were close and he remembers them all growing up together, he wants the boy to become bigger, and his verse is probably one of the scariest things I’ve ever related to in music ever; He stops talking/rapping in the middle of a verse where he says, “and if I die before yo’ album drop I hope-” It continues into the second verse where it transitions into him rapping from the prospective of a girls little sister. Her eldest died a prostitute, and the boy rapped about it (see Keisha’s Song) and she didn’t like that. She raps about being one herself, and how she takes pride in it. His third verse is him reflecting on it all. The second song (Dying of Thirst) is him going in about how violent his neighborhood is.
These are only three songs (out of 13 (17 on the deluxe))- that go into depths that any musician at the top of their game, would have to step back and work on for some time before it can amount to something like this. The Heist wasn’t a bad album, but to say it deserved the Grammy over K. Dot is ridiculous. The Heist isn’t about real shit; If you consider it real and relatable, you shouldn’t even have to post it cause you’re above it. Don’t praise something that you can write one sentence to. “you shouldn’t let anything hold you back and just do you” doesn’t need an anthem. Shit’s played out. K. Dots EP let the world see into why niggas are the way they are. Things they have to deal with. Things that almost anyone can relate to (the last line of the first verse on SAM;IDT had me cry the first time I heard it, not cause I had a gangbanging friend who died before my album dropped, but because I’ve have the best of friends pass away before they can see what they’ve always told me they’ve wanted from me. Because my grams died before I walked across the stage for Graduation. Because my relationship with some of my best relatives doesn’t exist anymore.) on any level of comprehension. GKMC was left up to interpretation. Yeah, there is a story/theme, but you can digest it how you like. Plenty more reason that deserved the Grammy.
To defeat my personal points, you can’t argue that The Heist was better than a (musical) story. Written for his audience. You think Macklemore wanted to make a radio hit or two? Listen to his stuff way before his newer stuff and tell me it ain’t geared for specific reasons.
I’m livid this man is getting all this praise for a song that’s supposes to be supporting LGBT+ (though, Macks want you to know, he isn’t gay for the first verse for the most part)- and “Thrift Shop,” which isn’t even that good of a song. Why you shopping at GoodWill? You know people who can’t afford things go there, right? Make a song about donating shit if you really about the cause. Acknowledge queer/LGBT musicians/rappers if you really want to support. Don’t victimize yourself as the only rapper taking a stance and put the rest of hip-hop in this box of being homophobic.
Kanye and Dot’s albums were robbed severely. You cannot tell me he raps about real shit; Kanye did New Slaves. Dot did Money Trees. Have you listened to those? That’s not real shit? Or is it shit you don’t get? It can be easy when you don’t relate to it in some sense. It’s utter bullshit for people to give credit in such a category you don’t understand. His guy is supposed to be the face of hip-hop to a crowd of people who are going to see, “He won a grammy, he has to be the best right now,” and it’s not even true. All 5 nominees had mixtapes/albums before these, and Macklemore has never stood even a quarter as high as J. Cole (who was robbed a nomination imb)
I got so far off topic I just started ranting. I’m not even meaning to go off on you dude. I saw this list and it just bothered me so much.
